There’s a homeless pet crisis in Manitoba. Shelters are overwhelmed and struggling to stay afloat. The Humane Society frequently has to freeze intake. There’s often no place homeless animals can be taken to receive care, protection and shelter. We’re not okay with that.
It’s not just a city problem. We have homeless pets struggling to survive outdoors right here in the neighbourhoods of East St.Paul
…so we couldn’t just look away. We had to do something to try to help.
In the summer of 2025, we found ourselves in the trenches – caring for three litters of kittens (18 kittens in total) that were born outdoors to strays in Pritchard Farm – as well as three adult cats that were “dumped” in the area. We heard from other residents who were also concerned for homeless cats they were aware of in the neighbourhood.
Regardless of whether you’re a cat person or a dog person, if you’re a compassionate person it’s heartbreaking to know that helpless furbabies who once had a home are on their own, struggling to stay alive outdoors, in our community.
They struggle to survive frigid temperatures in the winter, heat advisories in the summer, as coyotes roam the area in search of prey. Some have frozen to death in the winter, and coyotes have recently been seen with cats dangling from their mouths in the area.
We started Paws & Peeps as a mission-driven social enterprise to help homeless animals, not just here in East St.Paul, but through out the Winnipeg area – as well as the rescue organizations who work tirelessly to save and care for them.
